Soil microorganisms are key drivers of ecosystem functions supporting biodiversity, food production, and climate regulation. Restoring multiple ecosystem functions under intensive land-use and climate change requires steering microbiome composition. However, this remains challenging due to the high complexity of soils and the assembly rules of their microbiomes. As the extensively studied human gut microbiome has considerable similarities with the soil microbiome, we explore advances in steering the human gut microbiome composition to improve the steering of soil microbiomes.
