The purpose of the study is to substantiate the historical and commemorative significance of the building of Municipal Budgetary General Education Institution “Inza Secondary School No. 1 named after Hero of the Soviet Union Y. T. Alasheev”, drawing on documented biographies of test pilot Y. T. Alasheev and intelligence radio operator E. Ya. Vologodskaya, the chronology of their commemoration, and court case materials. For the first time, the article attempts to bring together archival materials from the Ulyanovsk Regional Scientific Library, regional periodicals, and court rulings on the protection of a cultural heritage site to show how, in this case, the building’s status as a historical monument is inseparable from its role as an educational institution. The article reconstructs the history of commemorating Y. T. Alasheev (1960-2023) and E. Ya. Vologodskaya and describes the stages in the legal recognition of the school’s memorial significance (2014-2025). The scientific novelty lies in introducing court case No. A72-5573/2025, concerning the enforcement of the obligation to preserve the school building, into scholarly circulation for the first time as a source documenting both the building’s physical condition and its memorial status. The study finds that the case for preserving the building rests not on rhetoric about a “special spirit of place”, but on a verifiable body of evidence: dates of study, order numbers, and the titles of publications in which the relevant information appeared. It is also shown that the stories of Y. T. Alasheev and E. Ya. Vologodskaya are not a coincidence but reflect a broader pattern in a small provincial town during the interwar and wartime years, where the school became a focal point for an exceptionally large number of biographies of national significance.
