A wattmeter is described which is capable of measuring separately the real and imaginary parts of the complex acoustic intensity in water. A general expression for the complex intensity is derived and used to provide a basis for the experimental measurements. The instrument was tested for the case of a point source. The results show the real part of the intensity to decrease as 1/r2 from the source and the imaginary to decrease as 1/r3 as predicted by the theory.
