Why the study?

Russian hypertension trends over 30 years support continued surveillance; leaves open whether changes warrant revised guidelines.
Background: Hypertension (HT) is a strong predictor of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) risk, with attributable fraction for CVD mortality of about 40%. Although CVD mortality in Russia has been declining, it still remains among the highest in Europe. The awareness and control of HT have an important impact on CVD incidence and mortality but their trends in the Russian population have not been reported. Objective: To assess the trends in HT prevalence, awareness and blood pressure (BP) control in population over the last 30 years, the period of large mortality fluctuations in Russia. Methods: The data came from the series of epidemiological studies in Novosibirsk (Russia): (1) three cross-sectional surveys of the WHO MONICA Project conducted in 1984/85, 1988/89 and 1995/96; (2) the HAPIEE project surveys conducted in in 2003/05, 2006/08 and 2014/17, and (3) a population sample survey conducted in the frame of IPCDR Project in 2015/17. We assessed the prevalence and awareness of HT and control of BP among 24,109 persons (11,041 men and 13,068 women). The present analysis was limited to age group 45–64 years.

Malyutina et al. (2018) conducted a cross-sectional in Hypertension (n=24,109). 30-year calendar time trends (1984-2017) was evaluated on Prevalence, awareness, and blood pressure control of hypertension. Thirty-year cross-sectional surveys of 24,109 Russian adults aged 45-64 assessed hypertension trends, though specific result figures were omitted from the abstract.
