Human interaction involves adapting behaviors, conversations, and nonverbal cues—such as facial expressions, gaze, gestures, and intonation—to social contexts. Human-Agent Interaction (HAI) and Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) aim to understand human behaviors and provide appropriate responses across fields like healthcare, education, and entertainment. Driven by advances in deep learning, LLMs, reinforcement learning, and multimodal learning, this article reviews recent machine-learning-based HAI and HRI research. Key topics include human behavior recognition, dialogue systems, emotion and intention estimation, personalized agents, and adaptive behavior control concluding with current challenges and future research directions.
