Maritime transport remains central to international trade, carrying the vast majority of global merchandise flows and functioning as a key driver of economic integration and development. In recent decades, the sector has undergone profound transformation driven by technological innovation, tightening environmental regulations, evolving trade patterns, and growing sustainability imperatives. These forces are reshaping the planning, operation, and governance of maritime transport systems worldwide. For maritime-dependent developing economies such as Nigeria, the ability to anticipate and respond to these changes is increasingly critical to competitiveness, resilience, and sustainable growth. This paper examines future trends in maritime transport development through a systematic and critical review of peer-reviewed literature and authoritative secondary sources. It focuses on interrelated global developments, including digitalization and smart shipping, decarbonization and green maritime practices, port automation, and the advancement of integrated maritime logistics. By synthesizing insights across these strands of scholarship, the study identifies dominant trajectories shaping the sector and considers their broader implications for maritime transport systems. These trends are then contextualized within Nigeria’s maritime environment, with particular attention to structural, institutional, and policy dimensions. The paper’s contribution lies in its integrative and comparative analysis, which links global maritime transformations to Nigeria’s specific developmental conditions. Aligned with key International Maritime Organization frameworks and relevant Sustainable Development Goals, the findings indicate that while emerging trends present significant opportunities for Nigeria, their realization will depend on coherent policy alignment, strengthened institutional capacity, and sustained investment in maritime technology and infrastructure.
