This poem, A Packet Crossing the Indian Ocean, examines the circulation of everyday commodities within the Global South through the lens of a single, ordinary object: a packet of instant noodles. Situated within a southern African context, the poem traces the transnational journey of the packet—from production and shipment across the Indian Ocean to its eventual consumption in a modest, local setting. By engaging with themes of mobility, informal economies and postcolonial entanglements, the poem foregrounds the uneven dynamics between that which moves freely and that which remains constrained. Simultaneously, it emphasises the intimate, embodied act of eating as a site where global histories are quietly encountered and momentarily held. Sensory elements such as taste, heat and texture are central to understanding how distant geographies and histories are internalised in everyday life. Rather than offering resolution, the poem dwells on tension, highlighting how acts of sustenance can both obscure and reveal the complex trajectories of global exchange, memory and inequality.
