The present systematic review aimed to examine the empirical literature on the challenges and sustainability-oriented strategies in public management and the comprehensive management of municipal solid waste in Latin America. The PRISMA methodology was applied, and studies published between 2020 and 2026 and retrieved from Scopus, SciELO, and ScienceDirect were reviewed. After the selection process, 30 empirical articles were analyzed. The findings show that the main challenges are related to institutional limitations, insufficient funding, infrastructure deficiencies, and weak coordination among the actors involved. Likewise, the most recurrent strategies include the strengthening of public management, the circular economy, citizen participation, environmental education, technological innovation, and strategic planning. The review concludes that integrating these strategies contributes to more efficient and sustainable waste management systems. The review provides useful evidence to guide public policies and strengthen municipal management in the region.
