Young learners, with their excitement in the EFL classroom, need teachers to be more creative to enhance meaningful learning. Because play is part of their learning process, this study used a game-based learning approach to improve vocabulary acquisition. Game-Based Learning (GBL) is an innovative approach that integrates game elements and principles to enhance students’ learning outcomes. This study examined GBL's effect on English vocabulary and Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) among elementary students. Findings indicate that fourth-grade students’ SRL remains at the co-regulation stage and still requires adult assistance. This finding suggests that SRL development does not always directly align with short-term academic achievement. It suggests that GBL in this context facilitates SRL. The originality lies in demonstrating that GBL creates a positive cycle that makes students enjoy learning, so they participate more, which in turn forces them to engage in SRL, such as preparing for study, and by presenting challenges within the game that enable them to find solutions and plan for improvement.
