We studied intermediate filament function generally and the function of a specific intermediate filament, INA, using separate transcriptomic methods. Cells engineered to lack expression of a separate intermediate filament protein Krt18 manifested inability to express or activate expression of intermediate filament family orphan 2 encoded by IFFO2, and of filamin binding LIM protein 1 encoded by FBLIM1, but instead activated syncoilin, intermediate filament protein encoded by SYNC. INA was contained within a co-regulated transcriptional network with neurofilament medium and light chains NEFL and NEFM.
