Art therapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) both promote methods of self-discovery and exploration through sensory channels: art therapy by enhancing creative thinking and problem solving through art making product and processes, and NLP by using sensory based observation to assist in mapping out individuals' cognitive processes. Art therapy has not embraced the NLP sensory information available as have other therapeutic disciplines. The American Art Therapy Association (AATA) approved programs have not integrated NLP into their curriculums. This investigation incorporates a review of the relevant literature, including the sparse entries relating NLP to art therapy practice, followed by the results of a workshop that presented selected core NLP methods to a group of art therapists. The study concludes by recommending further research and by reviewing how NLP techniques can benefit art therapists.
