This article discusses examples from the field of special machine construction that feature a high degree of automation. Systems for the testing methods UT, MT, and PT are presented. Either component handling is automated via robotics or gantry systems, or sensor positioning is automated in the case of ultrasonic testing. In ultrasonic testing, fully automated evaluation has long been state of the art. Current trends include phased array testing (PAUT), using modern algorithms such as TFM (Total Focusing Method) or PWI (Plane Wave Imaging) when appropriate. In magnetic particle testing, the crack evaluation is usually carried out manually. The AI-based software CRACKVIEW AI is now used for fully automated crack assessment. The algorithm has been trained using many thousands of images and delivers good results. Initial results for PT testing are now available. The special machine construction sector is undergoing change due to the increased use of robotics. High flexibility and falling prices are driving this development. High labour costs, the difficulty in finding suitable inspection staff, and the desire to minimise the "human factor" are further drivers behind an increasing trend towards a higher degree of automation.
