Prison rehabilitation programs aim to promote behavioral change, personal transformation and social reintegration. This study explored female inmates’ experiences of rehabilitation programs in Tabora Municipality, Tanzania, using a qualitative phenomenological design guided by Restorative Justice Theory. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and non-participant observation and analyzed thematically. Findings showed that vocational training, counselling and spiritual support were perceived to enhance practical skills, self-confidence, discipline, emotional adjustment and self-reliance. However, inadequate resources and qualified instructors constrained programme implementation, while unemployment, social stigma and limited community support hindered reintegration after release. The study concludes that rehabilitation can support personal development but requires stronger institutional and community collaboration to achieve sustainable outcomes. It recommends increased investment in training materials, equipment and qualified instructors, alongside gender-responsive rehabilitation programs, post-release employment support and community sensitization to reduce stigma and promote the successful reintegration of former inmates.
