Focusing on the viral circulation of Madonna’s ‘16 Consecutive Squat Challenge’, the article introduces the concept of mediated celebrity age to distinguish the temporality of circulating celebrity images from chronological age. Through qualitative analysis of Xiaohongshu posts and comment threads, it shows that Chinese users evaluate Madonna less through wrinkles or cosmetic intervention than through bodily vitality, physical capability, and healthy ageing. Discussions frequently invoke culturally specific concepts such as qixue (气血, breath and blood), while Madonna’s muscular body becomes a point of departure for critiques of bai-you-shou (白幼瘦, white, infantilised, and thin), neijuan (内卷, involution), overwork, healthcare, and the social conditions that shape healthy ageing. The article argues that Madonna’s circulation on Xiaohongshu reveals a cultural double standard of ageing. Rather than reproducing dominant Euro-American narratives of female decline, Chinese users transform Madonna into a catalyst for embodied self-reflection and social critique. By tracing the transcultural circulation of a global celebrity, the article contributes to celebrity studies, cultural gerontology, and platform studies by demonstrating that celebrity ageing is continually remade through digital circulation and culturally situated interpretation.
