Purpose This study examines how data and business intelligence (BI) systems support procurement decisions and strategic execution. It aims to improve the efficiency of business management. Design/methodology/approach A five-stage implementation framework is proposed for integrating BI into strategic business execution. The methodology includes technical validation and a case study that assesses the impact of digital transformation and BI adoption on tracking strategic execution and key performance indicators (KPIs). We frame BI adoption within the broader digital transformation (DT) agenda, aligning data, processes and governance to strategic objectives. Findings Research shows that aligning digital transformation initiatives with an organization’s specific operational needs is the most cost-effective path to achieving efficiency. Analysis suggests that a successful digital transformation must be closely linked to the management requirements. Selecting appropriate BI tools is critical to delivering substantial business value. Research limitations/implications The proposed framework offers managers a structured approach to implementing BI systems aligned with strategic goals. The case study provides actionable insights for professionals aiming to improve operational and management performance through data-driven strategies and digital transformation. Originality/value The research contributes to the literature on digital transformation by presenting a structured, stage-gated framework for integrating BI tools into strategic management. It offers practical guidance for organizations seeking to enhance performance through data-informed decision-making, differentiating itself through a detailed implementation model developed and illustrated in a procurement context.
