Key result
Combined exercise, acupressure, and watermelon juice lowers systolic BP by ~12 mmHg in elderly patients.
Why the study?
Hypertension is commonly experienced by the elderly, and uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. Non-pharmacological interventions such as hypertension exercise, acupressure therapy, and watermelon juice consumption can be applied as efforts to control blood pressure.
Does a combined non-pharmacological intervention of hypertension exercises, acupressure therapy, and watermelon juice administration reduce blood pressure in elderly individuals with hypertension?
Does a combined non-pharmacological intervention of hypertension exercises, acupressure therapy, and watermelon juice administration reduce blood pressure in elderly individuals with hypertension?
A community-based program combining hypertension exercises, acupressure therapy, and watermelon juice consumption was associated with short-term reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure among elderly individuals with hypertension.

May support community multimodal BP interventions in elderly; hypothesis-generating and should not change practice without RCTs.
Hypertension is one of the non-communicable diseases commonly experienced by the elderly population. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to complications such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. Hypertension management can be carried out through both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. Non-pharmacological interventions that can be applied include hypertension exercise, acupressure therapy, and watermelon juice consumption. Hypertension exercise is beneficial for improving blood circulation and increasing blood vessel elasticity. Acupressure functions to provide relaxation effects and improve the body’s energy flow, while watermelon juice contains potassium, citrulline, and antioxidants that help reduce blood pressure. The Community Service Program (Kuliah Kerja Nyata/KKN) was conducted through an educational approach and direct practice involving elderly participants in Air Sebakul Village. Activities included blood pressure examinations, implementation of hypertension exercise, acupressure therapy, watermelon juice administration, and observation of blood pressure results before and after the intervention. The results showed a decrease in blood pressure following the combined intervention. This program indicates that the implementation of non-pharmacological therapies can help control blood pressure in elderly individuals.

Putri et al. (2026) studied Hypertension (n=72). Hypertension exercise, acupressure therapy, and watermelon juice administration vs. Pre-intervention baseline (single-arm pre-post design) was evaluated on Mean systolic blood pressure (mmHg) (MD -12 mmHg). Combined hypertension exercise, acupressure therapy, and watermelon juice reduced mean BP from 150/95 to 138/85 mmHg (-12/-10 mmHg) in elderly patients.
