This paper proposes an erotic interpretation of Rimas humanas y divinas del licenciado Tomé de Burguillos Sonnet 2, as well as a reflection on the hermeneutics of eroticism. To this end, and after an overview of scholarly literature on eroticism in Golden Age literature, in the Burguillos, and in Sonnet 2, we first examine some of Lope’s daring verses in earlier texts and in other Burguillos sonnets. Second, we consider the setting of the river and the washerwomen and reflect on the possible eroticism of that landscape; likewise, we examine the meaning of the word “foam” in various erotic codes. Finally, we analyze Sonnet 2 through the aforementioned erotic perspective.
