Urban waste management is a major challenge in modern cities due to increasing population, rising waste generation, inefficient collection schedules, overflowing bins, and excessive fuel consumption. Traditional waste collection methods follow fixed routes and schedules regardless of the actual fill level of waste bins, resulting in unnecessary vehicle movement and poor resource utilization. To overcome these limitations, this project proposes an IoT-based Smart Waste Management System that enables real-time monitoring and intelligent waste collection. The system uses ultrasonic sensors installed inside waste bins to continuously measure garbage levels. The collected data is processed through ESP32 and NodeMCU microcontrollers and transmitted to a centralized monitoring platform using the MQTT communication protocol. Municipal authorities can access real-time information through a cloud-based dashboard, allowing timely collection and effective route planning. The proposed system helps optimize vehicle routes based on actual bin status, reducing fuel consumption by approximately 30-40% and minimizing waste overflow incidents. Furthermore, the platform provides valuable analytics for resource allocation, operational planning, and predictive maintenance. By reducing unnecessary fleet operations, the system lowers carbon emissions and supports environmental sustainability. Overall, the proposed solution enhances waste collection efficiency, improves urban cleanliness, reduces operational costs, and contributes to the development of smart and sustainable cities.
