Interrogative contact-control markers serve a phatic function in discourse. The general aim of this work is to describe the social variation in the use of the most frequent markers of this type in a sample of 144 semi-structured interviews from the PRESEEA corpus, corresponding to the speech communities of Madrid, Malaga, Mexico City and Santiago de Chile. Specifically, the frequency of use of these particles was correlated with the social factors of sex, age, and educational level of the informants in the four selected communities. Furthermore, the findings for the aforementioned varieties of Spanish language were compared to provide a sociopragmatic overview of the regional distribution of these markers. The results indicate that each dialectal variety exhibits a particular configuration, as different social factors are determining factors in each. However, a general trend is identified: the more frequent use of interrogative contact-control markers in the discourse of young men with a medium or high level of education.
