Counts of the black-faced spoonbill were conducted on Furugelm Island in 2021 and 2025. Since the discovery of a single breeding pair in 2003, their number steadily increased, reaching 41 pairs in 2025. Two adult birds recorded from the colony in 2025 were identified as hybrids with the Eurasian spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia), which represented 2.4% of the total breeding population.
