Metagenomics offers comparable detection with higher taxonomic resolution than 16S sequencing; leaves open whether it improves outcomes in culture-negative endocarditis.
Although valuable for diagnosing blood culture-negative infective endocarditis, 16S rDNA sequencing and metagenomics on valve/vegetation have never been compared using identical DNA extracts. We compared methods on surgical samples from definite, possible, and rejected infective endocarditis involving culture-negative native valves. Positivity rates were similar, taxonomic resolution being higher for metagenomics.
