Why the study?
Inferior vena cava drainage into the left atrium is an exceedingly rare congenital anomaly, and its co-occurrence with partial anomalous pulmonary venous return diagnosed and surgically corrected during infancy had not been previously reported in the literature.

This case report describes the first documented diagnosis and successful surgical repair during infancy of combined anomalous inferior vena cava drainage into the left atrium and partial anomalous pulmonary venous return, demonstrating complete symptom resolution.
Inferior vena cava (IVC) drainage into the left atrium (LA) is an exceedingly rare congenital anomaly. It may occur in isolation or with other congenital heart defects, most commonly an atrial septal defect. We report a case of IVC drainage into the LA with partial anomalous pulmonary venous return. This is the first case with this combination of findings in the literature that was diagnosed and surgically corrected during infancy.Recognition of congenital anomalies of systemic and pulmonary venous return is crucial, as early surgical correction can alleviate symptoms and reduce the risk of long-term complications.

Jacobs et al. (2026) conducted a case report in Anomalous drainage of the inferior vena cava into the left atrium with partial anomalous pulmonary venous return and atrial septal defect (n=1). Surgical repair (pericardial patch closure of ASD with baffling of IVC to RA and anomalous pulmonary vein to LA, plus PFO closure) was evaluated on Resolution of intracardiac shunting and freedom from acute hypoxic respiratory failure.
