Unlike any of Diana Abu-Jaber’s previous literary fictions, Fencing with the King (2022) comes as an audacious attempt through which the novelist constructs sociocultural and sociopolitical simulacra to renarrate the Arab/Arab-American diasporic self. The novel takes as its point of departure the protagonist’s discovery of a blue letter that operates as a conduit triggering a journey through which a whole family narrative is revisited. In this interview, conducted by email in October 2025, Diana Abu-Jaber comments on her reimagination of the memory of an extended family—all while relating such a literary endeavor to contemporary human issues. The conversation also proves to be an opportunity to reveal the writer’s future literary projects.
