This paper examines the distinction between love as an expression of existence and attachment as a psychological construction. It explores how expectation, comparison, competition, possession, sacrifice, suffering and fear of losing someone are socially and psychologically presented as measurements of love. It further investigates how ego-defence is justified as self-respect and how individuals who express love are transformed into unquestionable authorities. The paper argues that companionship does not require psychological ownership, self-abandonment or dependency. Love allows another existence its freedom without making that existence the centre of one's own.
