This paper presents a dual band Planar Inverted-F Antenna (PIFA) that can transmit high power signals, providing a directional radiation pattern in the ISM band of 2.4–2.5 GHz and the U-NII band of 5.15–5.85 GHz. The maximum gain reached by this PIFA antenna is 8.7 dB and 10.2 dB for both bands, respectively. The structure of the antenna is completely metallic with the purpose of reducing losses and maximising efficiency to better handle high RF transmission power for different applications. Due to its directional characteristic, it is also compatible for low-power applications to extend coverage and reduce interference to other local systems. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first time that a PIFA has been modified into a directional antenna that is compatible for power applications.
