Bifurcation at depinning transition for Frenkel–Kontorova models *

We prove that the bifurcation happening at the depinning transition of Frenkel–Kontorova models with spatially periodic conditions is generically a ‘saddle node on a cycle’, as commented by Baesens and MacKay (1998 Nonlinearity 11 949–64).
