SACLA is a Japanese x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) facility that has been operating for academic and industrial users. A pulsed high-voltage electron gun equipped with a thermionic cathode made of a single-crystal CeB6 has been used to deliver high-brightness electron beams required for XFEL operation. Recently, an upgrade plan for SACLA based on electron-source technologies was proposed. This plan emphasizes not only upgrading the repetition rate but also improving XFEL light quality. The strategy and progress toward developing an ultimate thermionic electron gun for the SACLA upgrade are described in this paper.
