Endovascular therapies for renal artery stenosis show variable impacts on blood pressure and renal function.
Why the study?
Rapid advances in endovascular therapy for renal artery stenosis have left clinically controversial issues, such as the timing of intervention and selection of benefiting populations, alongside key knowledge gaps.
Do emerging endovascular techniques improve blood pressure, preserve renal function, and reduce restenosis in patients with renal artery stenosis?
Do emerging endovascular techniques improve blood pressure, preserve renal function, and reduce restenosis in patients with renal artery stenosis?
This review summarizes current evidence on emerging endovascular techniques, preoperative functional assessment, and patient selection for renal artery stenosis revascularization.

Endovascular techniques for renal artery stenosis show variable success with potential restenosis reduction; leaves open optimal patient selection and timing for prospective trials.
Renal artery stenosis (RAS) is a significant cause of secondary hypertension and renal insufficiency. With the rapid advancement of endovascular techniques, endovascular therapy has become the mainstream modality for RAS revascularization. This article systematically reviews the etiology and pathophysiology of RAS, elaborates on the principles, clinical application status, and efficacy of emerging endovascular techniques, including percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty, stent placement, drug-coated balloons, chocolate balloons, and covered stents. It summarizes the value of imaging diagnosis and functional assessment in preoperative screening and evaluates postinterventional outcomes regarding blood pressure improvement, renal function changes, restenosis, and complications. Finally, it discusses clinically controversial issues such as the timing of intervention and selection of benefiting populations, and provides an outlook on future technological directions. This article reviews the current evidence and identifies key knowledge gaps, with the aim of informing clinical decision-making and highlighting promising directions for future research.

Wang et al. (2026) conducted a review in Renal artery stenosis (RAS) with secondary hypertension and renal insufficiency. Endovascular therapy (percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty, stent placement, drug-coated balloons, chocolate balloons, and covered stents) was evaluated on Blood pressure improvement, renal function changes, restenosis, and complications. Endovascular therapy techniques for renal artery stenosis were reviewed regarding their clinical application, blood pressure improvement, renal function changes, and restenosis.
