Key result
Qigong exercise lowers mean systolic blood pressure by ~23 mmHg from baseline in hypertensive patients.
Why the study?
The effect of Qigong exercise on reducing blood pressure in patients with hypertension needed to be determined.
Does Qigong exercise reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure in hypertensive patients?
Does Qigong exercise reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure in hypertensive patients?
In this small single-group pretest-posttest study, Qigong exercise was associated with significant short-term reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure among community-dwelling hypertensive patients in Indonesia.

Qigong may support adjunctive BP lowering in hypertension; leaves open efficacy and safety in randomized trials before practice change.
This study aimed to determine the effect of Qigong exercise on reducing blood pressure in patients with hypertension. The research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design using a one-group pretest–posttest approach. The study population consisted of all hypertensive patients in the Villa Japos Blok N1 RW 014 area, Ciledug, Tangerang City, Banten. The sample was selected using a purposive sampling technique based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Blood pressure measurements were conducted before (pretest) and after (posttest) the intervention using a standardized sphygmomanometer. The results showed a reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure following the Qigong exercise intervention. Data analysis was performed using the paired-samples t-test for normally distributed data or the Wilcoxon signed-rank test for non-normally distributed data, with a significance level of 0.05. The analysis demonstrated a statistically significant effect of Qigong exercise on reducing blood pressure among hypertensive patients. This study concluded that Qigong exercise may serve as a complementary therapy to support hypertension management by contributing to blood pressure.

Suratini et al. (2026) studied Hypertension (n=26). Qigong exercise vs. Pre-intervention baseline (one-group pretest-posttest) was evaluated on Change in systolic blood pressure (mmHg) (MD 23.48 mmHg, p=<0.001). Qigong exercise significantly reduced mean systolic blood pressure by 23.48 mmHg (p<0.001) and diastolic blood pressure by 9.57 mmHg (p=0.001) from baseline in hypertensive patients.
