This paper presents our ongoing work concerning two device description technologies: the electronic device description language (EDDL) and the field device tool/device type manager (FDT/DTM) concept. Both are intended to provide a unique method of describing field area devices, using passive encapsulation of data in case of EDDL and active encapsulation of data in case of the FDT/DTM concept. A simple test device configurable via serial communication is specified using both technologies. To use the descriptions, appropriate plug-ins are implemented for a WiP commercial engineering platform. This way, we consider it to stay in touch with future device description standards.
