Based on a comprehensive survey of design-build programs conducted in 2011-2012 consisting of interviews and reviews of a number of programs, this article provides a sketch of the motivations, practices, challenges, successes and failures associated with this popular and unique educational practice found in many architectural design programs. It provides a history of, documents the variety of rationale for, as well as the methods used in upstart and wellestablished Design-build programs. It serves as a guide for the development, improvement, and maintenance of existing and future programs.
