The Delphi technique is a means of gathering experts’ opinions by using several rounds of consultation and controlled feedback of results. Its use is frequently as a means of predicting future events and as a long range planning tool. This article provides a brief overview of a number of Delphi studies in the field of librarianship. Although the technique frequently relies on intuitive value judgements, and does not have a sound theoretical base, its strength lies in the belief that a consensus of experts’ views, reached over several rounds of consultation, will provide a stronger basis for decision than individual judgements.
