When the fall in myocardial contractility results in systemic hypotension, an associated decrease in coronary blood flow may occur and become an important factor in sustaining the hypotensive shock. Previous reports (5-7) described an effective method of interrupting such a vicious cycle in dogs put into shock and heart failure by pulmonary artery constriction. Elevating systemic blood pressure by pumping part of the venous blood (without oxygenation) into a systemic artery (V-A pumping), sharply increased coronary blood flow and resulted in functional recovery with reversal of experimental heart failure...References1.
