These concepts determine our whole attitude to the management of the disease and thus, in large measure, the fate of our patients. Nevertheless, it is important to realize that concepts of disease are in the nature of scientific hypotheses; they are necessary expedients in the search for knowledge, but they are useful only so long as they accord with the facts.
