The 51 and 31 commensurate reconstructions have been found on a (001) facet of a gold particle by profile images of ultrahigh vacuum high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The 51 reconstructed surface layer is contracted inward in the surface-normal direction by 20% of a (002) spacing (=0. 20 nm) from the hard-sphere model, and is strained-soliton-like in the surface-parallel direction.
