PURPOSE: To describe 24PAR summary data and results of relative validity comparisons to a physical activity log (PAL) and an accelerometer. METHODS: Fifty-three (53% women; 43.0 16.5 yrs; 27.9 5.8 kg/m2; mean SD) adults in a PA measurement study were evaluated on a matched day of observation. The telephone-administered 24PAR interview elicited waking and sitting time and openended reports of PA from three segments of the previous day. PAs and their duration were entered directly into a computer via linkage with the compendium of PA energy costs. The PAL examined sitting, household, occupation, transportation, conditioning, sports, and leisure activities. CSA accelerometer (model 7164–2.2) data were summarized in terms of activity counts (ct/min/d), duration (min/d: INACT = 0–499 ct; MOD1 = 500–1951 ct; MOD2 = 1952+ ct), and steps/d. Descriptive statistics (mean SD) and Spearman rank-order correlations formed the analysis. RESULTS: 24PAR waking time (15.9 1.6 hrs/d) was distributed in inactivity (65%), and in household (13%), occupational (8%), self-care (6%), leisure (6%), and transportation (2%) activities. 24PAR activity expenditure (18.5 11.9 MET-hrs/d) was distributed in household (32%), leisure (26%), occupation (17%), self-care (16%), and transportation (8%) activities. 24PAR-sitting time was significantly correlated with PAL sitting (r = 0.67) and CSA INACT duration (r = 0.47). Significant correlations were also noted for household (r = 0.53), occupational (r = 0.56), leisure (r = 0.74) and total activity (r = 0.31), relative to the PAL. CSA comparisons (n = 46) were significant for 24PAR total (MOD1, r = 0.55; steps/d, r = 0.29), household (MOD1, r = 0.29), and leisure activity (Counts, r = 0.54; MOD2, r = 0.40, steps/d, r = 0.57), but not occupational activity. CONCLUSION: The 24PAR appears to be a useful instrument for collecting detailed information about important PA behaviors, including inactivity, household, occupation, and leisure-time activities.
