Abstract The reliability and validity of measurements are important no matter what methods are used or for what purpose an evaluation of health promotion interventions is undertaken. Self-reports of health attitudes, behaviors, and outcomes are frequently suspected to have low reliability and validity. The precision, replicability, sensitivity to change, and accuracy of measures should be assessed in health promotion evaluations. Instruments and measures with known reliability and validity should be used. If new measures are developed, emphasis should go on the validity of the measures. Care should be taken to ensure that measures are applied consistently to all program participants. Only through careful attention to these measurement aspects will health promotion evaluations advance the field.
