Rabbits transfused after one to 2 hours in hemorrhagic shock nearly always recover. During the immediate post transfusion recovery phase the sensitivity to a purified E. colt toxin is increased 100,000 times normal. Return to normal tolerance to the endotoxin requires about 48 hours.
