Nigeria's Nobel prizewinner was interviewed by ’Biyi Bandele‐Thomas on 3 July, after President Babangida had annulled the elections on 12 June, in which Mashood Abiola won a cross country majority, but before his unexpected handover to the interim national government on 27 August. On 1 October, the government instituted a Commission of Inquiry to ‘determine the circumstances leading to the cancellation of the elections and look at the repercussions’.
