Educational drop-outs constitute a problem to which an increasing number of nations are sensitive. Programs to cope with this problem have focused primarily on organizational and curricular changes. Relatively little attention has been given to the role of the teacher in influencing educational and occupational aspirations. Drawing upon data from a case study of a West German village this paper examines the socio-cultural factors which affect the relationship of teachers to pupils whose demonstrated abilities exceed their aspirations.
