Does obesity predict coronary heart disease independent of blood pressure in men?
Obesity does not appear to be an independent predictor of coronary heart disease when adjusting for blood pressure.
Coronary Heart DiseaseKeys and his colleagues39 have discussed the evidence derived from their seven-nation study identifying obesity as a risk factor for coronary heart disease. They preferred the body-mass index (BMI = W/H2) as the index of obesity. Although blood pressure was significantly correlated with adiposity, the association was low. Cross-classification suggested a significant excess of coronary heart disease in the upper quartile of men classified as obese when blood pressure was ignored, but the effect of obesity disappeared when only normotensive men were considered. Using multivariate analysis, the authors could show no predictive value of body fatness . . .
