The ‘nurse practitioner’ is an advanced nursing clinician. Her role may involve interventions and practices traditionally within the medical domain, which often causes debate. Her practice, however, should be innovative and focused on those areas where her efficacy is equal to, or better than, her medical colleagues (1,2,3). But NPs must be cautious as claims of elitism could lead to inter and intraprofessional rivalry and increased tribalism, rather than expansion of practice.
