The revitalization of the dual system of vocational training in Germany

This chapter is part of a book that provides a detailed comparative analysis of the vocational training systems in 10 different countries, based on the results of a research project undertaken between 2005 and 2007. The analytical perspective adopted investigated the organising principles of each national vocational training system, its links with general education, further training and the labour market, and the strengths and weaknesses of each system. Innovations introduced over the past decade were given particular attention. In this chapter, the author describes and analyses the changes in the vocational training system of Germany over the past two decades, focusing on the dual system, the most important part of the training system. Aspects covered include the structure of the system, revision of training ordinances, financing, the willingness of companies to provide training, links between vocational training and the labour market, and future challenges facing the system.
