The identified gaps in methodology of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the process of foreign language teaching at a university make us turn to the analysis of such basic elements as the definition of ICT, teaching principles of using ICT, conceptual approaches to the organization of the educational process, etc. The article substantiates the need for combination of the methodological foundations of the activity-based approach in the use of ICT with the competency-based one. The author’s classification of ICT in the foreign language classes, which is founded on the idea of the complex use of several didactic approaches, allows us to fill educational process with personal meanings and respect for the student’s position as an independent subject of the development of his universal and professional competencies.
