METHODS: A comprehensive review of the literature on the Gold Cystoscope Award was conducted. Additionally, previous award winners were interviewed. Grateful access to primary sources from museums was also granted. RESULTS: The rich history of the Gold Cystoscope Award traces back to 1977 when Donald G. Skinner, MD first received this prestigious award, which was conjointly sponsored by the American Cystoscope Makers, Incorporated (ACMI) and the American Urological Association (AUA). For the previous four decades (starting in 1936), the ACMI presented a gold-plated boxed set of cystoscope instruments for the winning team of the AUA's Annual Golf Tournament. ACMI was formerly known as Wappler Electric Co., and Frederick Wappler may have provided this prize based on golf's popularity and for promotional purposes. Since 2014, the Gold Cystoscope Award has been sponsored by the AUA solely because of the National Physician Payment Transparency Program, which discouraged physicians receiving gifts from industry. Instead of being transferred between awardees, a completely functional gold cystoscope is awarded to each winner. The criterion for selection is that the recipient must be a urologist who has made remarkable contributions to the field within 10 years of finishing residency training. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the Gold Cystoscope Award has not only served as a testament to the individual excellence of urologists but also as an enduring symbol of recognizing the advancements in the field of urology.
