The construction industry has historically contributed to the waste of resources, energy use, and carbon emissions. Concrete and cement, the most common materials in the construction industry, are used in almost every building. However, the amount of carbon dioxide produced by conventional concrete and cement has an irreversible negative impact on the environment. To lessen the damaging environmental effects of these problems, many researchers have worked on sustainable materials. These problems have fueled research into sustainable building materials to reduce its negative environmental impacts. This study focuses on analysing the properties and applications of four sustainable building materials now used in the construction industry, namely polymer concrete, cement stabilised rammed earth, bamboo fibre geopolymer and waste steel slag. The researchers realised that for sustainable development, alternative materials and methods are to be found to reduce the dependence on traditional resources. Most of these four materials have sustainable materials added to traditional building materials and the emergence of these new materials provides more options for sustainable construction.
