Politeness is an important element of intercultural communication. The purpose of this article is to analyze the causes of the communicative failures of Chinese students in using the formulas of Russian speech etiquette, among which are the following: cultural differences (in values, in the way of thinking, in social customs, ethno-psychological differences); negative transference of native language etiquette formulas and rules for their use; intercultural psychological barriers. Research methods: analysis of theoretical literature, comparative method, analysis of errors and difficulties in the speech behavior of Chinese students, generalization of pedagogical experience. As ways to overcome the communicative failures of Chinese students in the process of teaching the Russian language, the following are considered: initial acquaintance with the formulas of Russian speech etiquette and situations of their use, a comparative analysis of speech situations, the development of students’ linguistic empathy as the ability to understand the way of thinking, state of mind and intentions of the speaker, analysis and discussion of ethical and speech errors, development and improvement of pragmatic skills and abilities in speech practice.
