In this paper, we provide a detailed survey of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) and examine the perceived social problems, including those that are currently apparent and those that can potentially be caused by the technology. After the introduction, we discuss initiatives proposed by governmental and professional entities to curtail the risks posed by adopting AI technologies without consideration of the associated risks. A brief survey of published research in AI security and related risks is then presented along with a discussion of findings and recommendations in the form of guidelines for future adoption of generative AI across a variety of contexts.
