Abstract Assessing clients’ religious and spiritual resources is a fundamental multicultural competence. Building on models for broaching race in counseling, this article argues that models of competence in assessing spirituality and religion must include a critical lens and a transference lens alongside insights from the psychology of spirituality and religion.
