Silver Jubilee Special Issue: Sustainability through Diversification in the Sugar Industry

Sugarcane, a globally cultivated commercial crop, holds paramount importance due to its immense contribution, especially in developing countries.It is grown over 26 million hectares in more than 100 countries and produces over 1.87 billion tonnes of cane.Traditionally aimed at sugar production, sugarcane currently meets 80% of global sugar demand.This production route also generates significant recyclable residues, such as cane trash, bagasse, molasses, press mud, and flue gases.The sugar industry is a cornerstone of the global economy, producing approximately 180 million metric tonnes of sugar annually, along with a vast array of valorized products.Leading producers like Brazil, India, Thailand, China, and Australia dominate the market, supporting millions of jobs, processing units, and integrated industries.The ASEAN countries, contributing around 10% of global sugar production, also play a crucial role in global sugar trade and significantly impact regional socio-economic development.
